Today I want to talk about your goals. We all need to have goals in our lives. Be this with work, family or personal we cannot hope to achieve success in any sector of our life without clearly defining what we wish the end result to be. This can be as simple as saving for a family holiday, getting that report in by 5pm on Friday so you can leave work on time, or getting in the best shape of your life.

Now the main hurdles and barriers commonly faced in achieving your goals will typically be one of these three things: fear, accountability or achievability. Now I’m purposefully starting with fear as it is the most important of all. The main reason people don’t achieve or let alone set their goals is often down to fear. As humans we all fear to fail and damn half the time we fear to succeed! The first step in any plan is to set aside your fear of what will happen wether you achieve your aim or not. A great way of doing this is stepping back and writing down what’s the worst and the best that could happen from the outcome. When you see how much the positives outweighs the negatives in most situations you will automatically let go of the fear thats holding you back from achieving your purpose. Obviously this is a very brief overview of overcoming your fears and I will go into much further detail in a later post but its a great technique to help you.

The next thing you need to understand even before you set your goals is that you are the only one accountable for them and you alone can ensure your success. At the end of the day you can have all the help in the world, be it from a PT, a coach or a family member, you are the only one that can see this through. You have to question how much you really want it? A good tool is to visualise how it will make you feel when you achieve it, how does it feel? What improvements will it make to your life? And when you have these in the forefront of your mind, keep them there. Use this as your motivation, your drive, your focus.

Finally, you need to ensure they are achievable goals and targets. The main reason people don’t achieve goals is they have their end goal in their mind and don’t create smaller goals along the way. As a result they get lost, struggle to quantify their level of progress, get fed up and again another goal fizzles out incomplete. You need to have specific plans to achieve the long term. You need to make daily, weekly, monthly even yearly goals if you hope to achieve overall success. Short term is just as important as long term, a war isn’t won over night and it’s vital to keep yourself on track and be able to recognise the improvements your making, by ticking off these smaller but just as necessary tasks.
